Cause of Underwater Caissons Damage
The underwater pipeline suffered both external and internal corrosion due to being submerged in salt water in a high-pressure area. The difference between the external and internal pressure added with the natural corrosive ability of salt water. The pipe structure then gave up creating a crack within the surface which became bigger and bigger over time as the salt-water penetrated the pipe coating. This then caused the internal and external pipe surface to wither away to corrosion.
Subsea Pipeline Repair Challenges Presented
The application site which is located several meters of water was one of the main challenges presented with the application. The decaying metal also became covered with algae, seaweed, barnacle, soft coral and other materials which needed to be properly removed, cleaned, and smoothen. An additional coating for the internal and external surface of the pipe was also applied near the affected area. The leak also had to be covered effectively before application could begin.
ProAssure Wrap Extreme Application Details
Several layers of ProAssure Wrap Extreme were applied over the affected area. The total area repaired measured 0.30 meters. The application area also had to be made sure to be free from debris to improve durability of the application. Before a layer of wrap could be applied the hole needed to be covered up and suspended using clams wherein it was secured into place before the application was wrapped around the pipe.
